Willson House Child Development Center — Generation to Generation
Willson House Child Development Center is a non-profit organization. It is open to all children regardless of race, religion, sex, or ethnic background. Our inter-generational program is one of the first of its kind in the state of Oregon. It has been a place for generations to learn and grow together since 1985. Unique to our program is the opportunity for your child to build relationships with seniors as they engage in special daily activities. It is truly a relationship to be treasured.
Willson House Child Development Center is located on campus with our Willson House Residential Care and Jason Lee Manor senior communities. The center was founded with the belief that inter-generational care benefits both children and seniors. Seniors present more natural familial type behaviors with the children and can serve as nurturers, mentors, historians, and storytellers. One study reported by Generations United showed that children in inter-generational programs achieved higher personal and social development and reading scores than children in regular programs.
At the same time, seniors benefit too. They receive the satisfaction of giving back, mentoring and sharing special gifts with the younger generation. According to Portland State University's Gerontology Department, seniors involved in inter-generational programs had better self-image, fewer sick days, and felt better about their own familial relationships.
At Willson House Child Development Center, you will find children and seniors interacting daily. Children and seniors will be together singing songs, telling stories, making crafts or participating in annual events like our Tea Party or Carnival. Seniors, who are able, are invited to visit our classrooms to interact with the children, lead projects, or serve as volunteers. No matter what the synergy may be, the young and young at heart will be learning and growing, together.
We believe learning should engage the whole child. Our program is developmentally appropriate with activities to help children develop at their fullest potential socially, emotionally, intellectually, and physically. Through creative curriculum, thematic units and a combination of child-directed exploration and teacher guided activities, our program provides a nurturing, imaginative, and stimulating environment as your child prepares for the kindergarten years.
